MIND SPA MURAL

CLIENT: MIND, TCV

DATE: JANUARY - SEPTEMBER 2012

LOCATION: London

As part of the renewal of the overgrown and unloved garden at the Mind Spa, I help The Conservation Volunteers run a consultation session with service users and staff. A mural was one of the elements to be incorporated into the design.

The mural began with a set of workshops with a focus group of service users and staff to generate ideas, discuss concepts and develop visuals. Together we developing the concept of a 'wall of wisdom', we collected quotes and personal copy from day centre users. The half finished quote from the photo is "I used to be sane, but then I got better". Many of the quotes were inspiration, some up-lifiting, and others darkly humorous, creating a real joy of a wall to read on just passing by, or sitting for longer.

I worked with the group to develop a visual style and colour pallet, and worked up the 'wall of wisdom' design. The branches of text spread up and across the large wall, and it's roots sprawled along the low wall, weaving and connecting the different 'rooms' of the garden. In further sessions the group designed and cut stencils of leaves for texture behind the text. The painting and stencilling took place in weekly sessions with a small team throughout the summer.
